THE SUPERNATURAL EVENTS SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF JESUS

Matthew 27:45-46, 50 (NIV)

From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. …Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (…). *And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open.

As Jesus suffered and died on cross, there were certain supernatural events that took place. One of them was the splitting of the veil of the temple from top to bottom. This was an official sign of the end of the Old Covenant. The high point of the Old Covenant was the atonement with the blood of animals that culminated in the high priest going into the holy of holies once a year on behalf of the people, (Ex.30:10). By the tearing of Christ’s body on the cross, a new and living way had been opened through which every man could be forgiven, perfected by one sacrifice and have direct access to God forever, (Heb.10:14, 19-23).

As Jesus died, there was an earthquake that led to the splitting of rocks and the opening of tombs. The earthquake and splitting of rocks were a sign that by the death of Christ, the power of death which the devil had, had been taken from him, (Heb.2:14-15). God had shaken and broken every stronghold the devil had on the earth. Every rock or mountain the devil had placed over our lives due to the fall of man was broken. With the opening of tombs, many saints of old who had died were seen alive and walking about in the city, (Matt.27:52-53). This was also a sign of what Jesus had achieved by His death on the cross. Man who was dead due to his fall and separation from God (because of sin), had been connected back to God and given life, for sin had been taken away!

Action Point:
Rejoice and worship God for all the wonderful things the death of Christ achieved for us.
