TOPIC; THE WORK OF GOD 2
Acts 16:30-32, Luke 10:39, 41-42 (He) brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

The question the Jailer asked Paul and Silas in our first text above, gives us a good picture of the normal human mindset about our great salvation and everything we desire to receive from God. The first thing our mind usually goes to is, ‘what we need to do’ to receive what we want from God. We are so used to doing things to get things. It is so bad that right now, so many people find it hard to believe that in order to receive their miracle or anything they desire from God, all that God requires from them is to believe in Jesus. Because of Jesus, God has freely made all things available to us, (Rom.8:31-32). The Holy Spirit desperately wants to reveal this to us, (1Cor.2:12). Everything about our life flows from our absolute faith in Jesus.
In James 1:22-25, the Bible speaks of us being doers of God’s word, but it gives a criteria for doing this work. This work can only be done after looking at something. Verse 25 says, “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” What we are to look at here is not the Law (Ten Commandments), but the perfect law of liberty. What is the perfect law of liberty? Apostle Paul describes the Law as the yoke of bondage (Gal. 5:1) but Jesus said we experience freedom by continuing in and knowing His truth, (John 8:31-32). The perfect law of liberty is the revelation of Christ and all He has done for us. As we continually see our true selves (like in a mirror) in the light of what Christ has done for us and we act in line with it, we will be blessed indeed. This is the work God wants us to do. This is why like Mary in our last text above, we need to sit down at Jesus’ feet and receive His word.
Prayer:
Dear Father, help me to see that because of Jesus I am qualified to receive all things and I am also empowered to do all that you want me to do.
