TONGUES ARE NOT A SIGN FOR BELIEVERS

1Corinthians 14:20-22a (NLT)

…don’t be childish in your understanding… Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind. It is written in the Scriptures: “I will speak to my own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners. But even then, they will not listen to me,” says the Lord. So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.

What Paul means by saying tongues are not a sign for believers, is that tongues are supposed to be normal or natural for every believer. Speaking with new tongues is one of the supernatural things that Jesus said will follow every believer, (Mark 16:17). Speaking in tongues is natural evidence that follows the baptism of the Spirit. Acts 2:4 – “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Every believer is supposed to experience the baptism of the Holy Ghost. This is why Paul asked the believers at Ephesus if they had received the Holy Ghost since they believed, (Acts 19:2). This shows that the only qualification for the baptism of the Holy Ghost is to believe in Jesus. The Bible says “And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied,” (Acts 19:6). As Peter preached the Gospel in Cornelius’ house, the moment he said that by believing in Jesus we receive remission of our sins, the Holy Ghost fell upon them and they began to speak in tongues, (Acts 10:42-46). We can speak in tongues as a prayer language (to God, 1 Cor.14:2) and by the Spirit we can speak in tongues to minister or give messages to others in languages we have never learnt. This is what Paul described as the gift of diverse kinds of tongues, (1 Cor.12:10).

Action Point:
Thank God for baptizing you with His Spirit and for the great ability He has freely given you to speak in tongues.
