Memorise: Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Ecclesiastes 5:5

READ: Ecclesiastes 5:4-6

4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 20-22; John 6:45-71

MESSAGE:

I understand that sometimes you can be very zealous about the work of God; so zealous as to to make vows that you cannot fulfill. No matter how zealous you are, please don’t make vows in a hurry. A vow is a bind, like a covenant between yourself and the person you are vowing to. You don’t enter into covenants just out of zeal, you enter knowing exactly what you are doing. Ecclesiastes 5:5 says:

“Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.”

If you are not sure that you can fulfill a vow, you don’t have to make the vow. Just have what you want to do in mind and work towards doing it. This is better that making the vow and not being able to fulfill it at the end of the day.

For example, if you want to make a vow that will require you to drop your pocket money and go hungry for a few days, well, it’s okay, as long as you are very sure that the Holy Spirit is leading you. However, vowing to give an amount that is beyond your pocket money is not wise, even if you expect an uncle to give you some more money, don’t make the vow.

Key Point:

Don’t be quick to make vows. God does not like vow breakers

Hymn 3:

1.When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2.Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3.Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4.But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5.Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
