WALK IN THE HUMILITY OF CHRIST
Philippians 2:5,8-9, 1Peter 5:5b-6, James 4:10 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: *And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: *… for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: *Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
In our study yesterday, we studied about the importance of patience in God for developing strength and character in us, in order to bring out the greatness that He has given us in Christ. Today we shall focus on the fact that one major character that we must develop and exhibit as we wait on God to lift us up is humility; specifically the humility of Christ.
To be humble doesn’t mean to look down on yourself. It means to see yourself the way that God sees you. It means not being so full of yourself that you can’t love, serve others and do God’s will, no matter what it will cost you. In Romans 12:3 (GNB) Apostle Paul said, “… do not think of yourself more highly than you should. Instead, be modest in your thinking, and judge yourself according to the amount of faith that God has given you.” Immediately after he said this, he began to talk about how we need to love, serve and work together with others just like the parts of a body functions.
God wants us to see ourselves highly because He sees us highly, special, valued and great in Christ, but He doesn’t want us seeing ourselves as unable to love others and be willing to serve them, no matter what it would cost us. When we cannot do this, we are thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought to. Genuine humility comes from the heart. Genuine humility helps us avoid strife and seeking vain glory. It makes us value and consider others more, (Phil.2:3-4). In Christ, you have the ability to be humble just like Christ is and as you keep yielding to God and remaining humble, God will keep lifting you up in Him.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank you for the grace you have given me to remain humble and to keep yielding to your to love, serve others and do your will.
