“Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” – 1 Corinthians 13:6-8

September 11, 2020

Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Nearly every adult alive in 1963 can probably recall the exact moment they heard the shocking news that President John F. Kennedy was shot.  In a similar fashion, there’s little doubt that anyone who was awake and alive on September 11, 2001, remembers very clearly what they were doing, where they were, who they were with, and what they felt when the towers fell.

Do you remember? Were you watching television? Were you on your way to work or school? For the thousands of lives lost to the tragedy of 9/11, most of them were just like you and me – normal, everyday people going to work, making a living, and taking care of their families.

Many people alive today weren’t even born yet. Some children were still so young that they ask, “What happened?” As painful as it may be to recount, do it anyway. Teach the children and generations that have come since that this is a country built upon, “In God We Trust.” And not just as a saying, but as a country that truly trusted a Sovereign God.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:6-8 that “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Jesus Christ is that – He IS Love.

This is what all the men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, taught us: that we, as Americans, all became one that day, unified in the fact that Islamic extremists considered us all unworthy and wanted to destroy us.

For the victims of 9/11, the distinction between race, creed, color, or religion became non-existent that day and the weeks and months to follow. It was out of LOVE for life, God, and fellowman that all the victims of 9/11 helped one another, even unto death.

Nineteen years later, we know we will never, ever be the same and that we must never, ever forget.
