WHAT DO YOU CHECK THE MOST?

Proverbs 4:20-23 (TPT)

Listen carefully, my dear child, to everything that I teach you, and pay attention to all that I have to say. Fill your thoughts with my words until they penetrate deep into your spirit. Then, as you unwrap my words, they will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being. So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.

In our world today, there are so many things vying for our attention and many times, we are not conscious of the negative effects that some of these things have on us. We are so eager to check certain things as if our life
depends on them or as if checking them will make our lives better. For some people, it is their social media status and for some it is their bank account. For some, it is their weight or complexion and for some, it is their health status. For some, it is the latest news or trends or what is in vogue. Many people prefer to check on things that are temporal than to check on things that are eternal. Many people are more concerned about what people think about them than about what God thinks about them. Many of these things have made many people insecure, afraid, worried, depressed and vulnerable to various kinds of manipulations.

While it is not a sin per se to check on these things, we must learn how to regulate them. We must not let them take the place and attention that we are supposed to place on God and His word. “The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat,” (Prov.15:30). “And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not” (Isa. 58:11). God will keep you in perfect peace as you keep your mind stayed on Him, (Isa.26:3). Be deliberate about ensuring that what you check and attend to most are the things that will make your soul whole and healthy. Focus more on the love, promises of God, all Christ has done for you and on spiritual things. Set your affection on things above, (Col.3:2). Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, (Matt.6:21).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please help me to pay more attention to you and your word more than anything else. Help me to keep my mind stayed on you.
