WHERE OUR VICTORY IS HINGED (1)

Matthew 16:15-18 (LB)

Then he asked them, “Who do you think I am?” Simon Peter answered, “The Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” “God has blessed you, Simon, son of Jonah,” Jesus said, “for my Father in heaven has personally revealed this to you—this is not from any human source. You are Peter, a stone; and upon this rock I will build my church; and all the powers of hell shall not prevail against it.

The reason Jesus asked His disciples the question about who they thought Him to be, is because, having an accurate knowledge of Jesus was necessary for them to experience the glory, power and blessings of God in their lives. This is the same for you and me today. The only thing God wants us to boast or rejoice is that we know Him, (Jer.9:23-24). And we can only know Him by knowing Jesus. Jesus is the perfect reflection of the image and personality of God, (Heb.1:1-3, Col.2:9). Is your knowledge of Jesus the greatest thing you rejoice about? Is it the greatest knowledge you desire? (Phil.3:10).

When Jesus said, “on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” The rock He was referring to was the revelation of Himself. It is not the knowledge or consciousness of the gates of hell that makes us victorious over them. It is the knowledge of Christ. Some believers boast about knowing the devil and His operations more than they boast about knowing Christ and His ways.

There is a real growth or building that needs to be taking place in our lives and it can only take place as we grow in the knowledge of Christ, (Acts 20:32). Just as Peter needed God’s help to know who Jesus really was, we also need God to help us know Jesus more.

Prayer:
Father, I sincerely desire to know Jesus more. Please reveal Him more and more to me.
