WITH SIN, IT’S NOW ‘IF,’ NOT ‘WHEN’

1John 2:1-2 (AMPC)

My little children, I write you these things so that you may not violate God’s law and sin. But if anyone should sin, we have an Advocate (One Who will intercede for us) with the Father—[it is] Jesus Christ [the all] righteous […]. And He [that same Jesus Himself] is the propitiation (the atoning sacrifice) for our sins, and not for ours alone but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

In our study yesterday, we saw that Jesus has taken away God’s punishment for our sins. It is also important that we always remember that as Jesus took away God’s punishment for our sins, He also took away our sin nature and broke the power of sin off our lives. Beloved, your old man was crucified with Christ and your nature of sin was destroyed. Now, you are free from sin, (Rom.6:6-7).

As a believer in Christ, God does not expect you to sin because you no longer have the nature of sin. Yes, David said “In sin did my mother conceive me,” (Psa.51:5), but this is no longer your story as a believer in Christ, because you have been born again. The natural man was conceived in sin and sin is his nature, but as a believer in Christ, you were conceived in God’s holy and righteous nature, (Eph.4:24).

“The person who has been born into God’s family does not make a practice of sinning because now God’s life is in him; so he can’t keep on sinning, for this new life has been born into him and controls him—he has been born again.” (1John 3:9, LB). As you understand and remain conscious of what Jesus did by dying for your sins, you will not sin. Jesus is not pleading your case before the Father, so you will continue in sin. He is pleading for you because you are no longer a sinner.

Faith Declaration:
By my faith in Christ, I am born again and I have God’s holy and righteous nature. Sin is no longer my nature.
