YEAST AND DOCTRINES

Matthew 16:5-6, 11-12 (CEV)

The disciples had forgotten to bring any bread when they crossed the lake. Jesus then warned them, “Watch out! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” *Don’t you know by now that I am not talking to you about bread? … Finally, the disciples understood that Jesus wasn’t talking about the yeast used to make bread, but about the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus also used yeast to explain the power and influence that the type of teachings we hear can have on our lives. Just like a little yeast can penetrate a large amount of baking flour to impact and transform it, the type of doctrines or teachings we hear can penetrate every area of our lives and have great effects on our lives. They may look small and insignificant, but with time, their effect on our lives will be mind-blowing.

Now, what exactly was the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees that Jesus was warning His disciples about? Jesus said, “You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won’t go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in,” (Matt. 23:13, CEV).
The teaching Jesus was warning His disciples against was the teaching of the Law and putting faith in one’s abilities to be saved or experience God’s power or blessings, instead of putting faith in Jesus.

This is what Paul was speaking about when he said, “A little yeast can change a whole batch of dough” (Gal.5:9, CEV). This is why Paul asked the Galatian church, “who had bewitched you?” (Gal.3:1-9). Avoid any teaching that does not make you put your faith and focus on Christ.

Prayer:
Father, please help me to guard my spirit from false teachings. Help me to feed only on the revelation of Christ.
