YOU ARE A SOLDIER OF CHRIST

Philemon 1:1-3 (GNB), 2Timothy 2:3-4 (LB)

From Paul, a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy—To our friend and fellow worker Philemon, and the church that meets in your house, and our sister Apphia, and our fellow soldier Archippus: May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. *Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Jesus Christ, just as I do; and as Christ’s soldier, do not let yourself become tied up in worldly affairs, for then you cannot satisfy the one who has enlisted you in his army.

Today, we shall study some characteristics of a soldier and how they apply to our being soldiers of Christ. A
soldier serves in an army. He or she receives strict training and develops strong discipline. A soldier is strong and tough. A soldier has a mission and is loyal to his or her commanding officer. As a soldier of Christ, you have been enlisted in the Army of God. You are a part of those that God uses to protect and advance His kingdom on the earth, (Matt.6:10). Jesus said He will build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against us as we bind and loose on earth what is bound and loosed in Heaven, (Matt.16:18b-19, AMPC). As we are advancing, we will be unstoppable.

As soldiers of Christ, we get our training from God’s word (2Tim.3:16-17, NIV) and exercising ourselves in godliness or spiritual things, (1Tim.4:8). We don’t get entangled in the things of this world. We immerse ourselves into God’s word, specifically the revelation of Christ and we live the life of Christ. Christ is the major armour we put on (Rom.13:14). We are strong in the power of His might (Eph.6:10). We are strong in His grace and all He has accomplished for us (2Tim.2:1). This is what makes us strong in faith and able to submit to God and resist the devil. The devil will do all He can to distract us and discourage us from our mission and loyalty to our commanding officer. But Christ has already defeated the devil, (Heb.2:14). What we do is to stand in the victory of Christ and enforce the victory of Christ over the devil. We pull down every stronghold he tries to raise against us in our minds by dominating negative thoughts with the truth of Christ (2Cor.10:3-5). Our major mission is to preach the gospel of Christ to rescue the souls of men from the power of the devil,
(Rom.1:15-16).

Prayer:
Dear Master, I thank you for enlisting me as a soldier in your army. Help me to be strong in the grace of Christ and use me to preach the gospel.
