Topic: The Creation Story Genesis 1:1-2:7

The earth was formless and desolate at first when God created the universe. The raging ocean that covered all was swallowed up in total darkness, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water. Then God commanded, “Let there be light,” and there was light. With what he saw, God was pleased. Then he separated the light from the darkness, naming the light “Day” and the dark “Night.” Evening passed and morning came—that was the first day. Then God commanded, “Let the water be divided and kept in two separate places”—and it was done. So God made a dome, and the water under it was separated from the water above it. He called the dome “Sky.” Passed the night and came in the morning—that was the second day. Then God commanded, “Let the water under the sky be gathered together in one place, that the earth may appear,” and it was done. He called the land “Earth,” and he called the water that had come together “Sea.” And what he saw pleased God. Then he commanded, “Let the earth produce all kinds of plants, grain-bearing plants and fruit-bearing plants,” and it was done. So the earth produced plants of all kinds, and what he saw pleased God. Passed the evening and came the morning—that was the third day. Then God commanded, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate day from night and show the time when days, years, and religious festivals begin; they will shine in the sky to give light to the earth”—and it was done. So God made the two bigger lights, the sun to rule the day, and the moon to rule the night; he made the stars as well. He placed the lights in the sky to shine on the earth, to rule day and night, and to divide light from darkness. And what he saw pleased God. Passed the evening and came the morning—that was the fourth day. Then God commanded, “Let the water be filled with many kinds of living creatures, and let the air be filled with birds.” So God created the great monsters of the sea, all manner of creatures living in the water, and all manner of birds. And what he saw pleased God. He blessed them all and told reproducing and filling the sea to the creatures living in the water, and he told the birds to increase in number. Passed the evening and came the morning—that was the fifth day. Then God commanded, “Let the earth bring forth animal life of all kinds: domestic and wild, large and small,” and it was done. So God made them all, and with what he saw, he was pleased. Then God said, “We’re going to make people now; they’re going to be like us and look like us. They will have power over fish, birds, and all animals, both domestic and wild, big and small.” So God created human beings to be like himself. He created them male and female, blessed them, and said, “Have many children, that your offspring may live throughout the earth and bring it under their control. I put the fish, the birds and all the wild animals in charge of you. I gave you all sorts of grain and all sorts of fruit to eat; but I gave grass and leafy plants for food for all the wild animals and for all the birds”—and it was done. God looked at all he had done, and he was very happy. Passed the evening and came the morning—that was the sixth day.

And so the entire universe was finished. God finished what he had done by the seventh day and stopped working. He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day because he had finished his creation by that day and had stopped working. And that’s how it created the universe. There were no plants on the earth when the Lord God made the universe, and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; but water would come up from under the surface, and water the ground. Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; in his nostrils he breathed life-giving breath and the man began to live.
