TOPIC: The Righteous Is Tested
READ: Psalm 11:1–7 King James Version (KJV)
- In the Lord I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?
- For look! The wicked bend their bow, They make ready their arrow on the string, That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.
- If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?
- The Lord is in His holy temple, The Lord ’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
- The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
- Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup.
- For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.
THE MESSAGE:
The background to today’s text is when Saul pursued and determined to kill David at all cost. On many occasions, David narrowly escaped Saul’s fiery weapons of destruction. In the Lord I put my trust is his opening sentence. He was surrounded by enemies and there was no place to flee for escape, not even the mountains. David saw his situation as a test of his righteous standing with God (verse 5), the foundation which must not be destroyed (verse 3). It was therefore not surprising that David refused to take advantage of opportunities he had to kill Saul (see 1 Samuel 24:2-7 and 26:7-10).
David’s decision to put his trust in the Lord (and not in his might or the counsel of his army general), is a lesson for you. The blessings of putting your trust in God in time of testing are many. They include: (1) Protection/Defense (Psalm 5:11), (2) Deliverance from enemies (Psalm 17:7), Latter day blessing (Job 2:9-10; 42:17-15), among others. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all (Psalm 34:19). Do not take laws into your hands.
PRAYER: I put my trust in You O Lord, let me not be ashamed
