RCCG LOWER JUNIOR ZEAL FOR 2022/2023
AGE 4-5 TEACHER’S MANUAL
SUNDAY 14TH OF MAY, 2023
LESSON THIRTY SEVEN (37)
TOPIC: GRIEVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

BIBLE TEXT: Acts 4:32-37; Acts 5:1-11
[32]And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
[33]And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
[34]Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
[35]And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
[36]And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
[37]Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Acts 5:1-11
[1]But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
[2]And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
[3]But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
[4]Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
[5]And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
[6]And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
[7]And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
[8]And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
[9]Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
[10]Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
[11]And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

MEMORY VERSE: Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereas ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

LESSON AIM: Grieving the Holy Spirit is dangerous (Sin).

CHILD RELATED TRUTH: You will be punished if you grieve the Holy Spirit.

INTRODUCTION: You grieve the Holy Spirit when you as a child of God intentionally sin and covered it up, this is causing sorrow, distress and emotional pain to Jesus Christ Himself through the Holy Spirit in you who is a witness to our every word, thought and actions. Our Memory verse warns us not to grieve the Holy Spirit. You can grieve the Holy Spirit with; Anger, bitterness, fighting, lying, deception, laziness, stealing, disobedience, greed etc,
Be careful what you say, think or do. Ephesians 4:29-31.

PROGRESSION OF EVENTS

  1. As God worked in their hearts, the believers in Jerusalem shared what they owned with each other and this spirit enables the apostles to tell of Jesus resurrection with great power. v4:32, 33
  2. Some believers sold lands or possessions, giving the money to the apostles for those in need. v4:32-35
  3. Ananias and Sapphire sold a piece of land. v5:1
  4. Ananias and Sapphire, desiring praise, schemed to give only part of the payment while saying they were giving all. v5:2-9a
They deliberately planned to lie. Lying is a sin. What is a sin? Do you ever lie so that others will think you are special?
  5. When Ananias lied, pretending to give the apostles all the money, Peter confronted him: he had allowed Satan to control him, causing him to lie to the Holy Spirit then Ananias fell down dead. v5:2-5
  6. Later, not knowing what happened, Sapphire came in. v5:7
  7. When Sapphire repeated her husband’s lie. Peter told her that she had not lied to him but to the Holy Spirit. Then she also fell over dead. v5:10

CLIMAX: Seeing God’s severe discipline on Ananias and Sapphire because they tried to deceive Him, everyone who heard developed a great fear of God. vs 11

CONCLUSION: Though afraid to join them, the people respected the believers and God worked in great power, and many more continued to be saved.

CHALLENGE: God expects His children to be truthful, God sees your heart, don’t think you can deceive God and escape His discipline. When you are tempted to pretend to be good in ways you are really not, Stop. Remember God desires truths in the inward part Psalm 51:6. Ask God to help you to be truthful. Never grieve the Holy Spirit.

INVITATION: Receive the Lord Jesus as your Saviour.
