SUMMARY OF LESSONS 40-41
LESSON FORTY (40)
TOPIC: BENEFITS OF A GRATEFUL HEART 10: MERCY

BIBLE TEXT: Psalms 51:1-19

MEMORY VERSE: Ps 145:9-10 – “The LORD is good to all; and his tender mercies are over all his works. All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.”

LESSON AIM: To teach the teenagers that having a grateful heart brings mercy.

CENTRAL TRUTH: The grateful heart attracts the mercy of God.

INTRODUCTION: Mercy is defined as the compassionate treatment of those in need, especially when it is within one’s power to punish or help them. The person showing mercy is at an advantaged position. He has what the other person does not have. The Bible says God showed us mercy when we did not deserve it. Mercy is when we receive what we do not deserve. When we think of the goodness of God, we are able to see our frailty and how we have not measured up to His standard. Psalm 51 is an expression of repentance and mercy.

STUDY GUIDE
SOME PEOPLE THAT GOD SHOWED MERCY TO IN THE BIBLE

  • Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10)
  • Jonah (Jonah 2:1-2)
  • The prodigal son (Luke 15:17-20)
  • Manasseh the King of Judah (2 Chro 33:12-13)
  • Ahab the King of Israel (1 Kings 21:25-26)

IN ADDITION TO MERCY BEING A BENEFIT OF A GRATEFUL HEART, WHAT ELSE QUALIFIES US FOR MERCY?

  • When you are merciful to others – Matt 5:7
  • Coming boldly without sin to the presence of God – Heb 4:16
  • Not judging others – Luke 6:37
  • Forgiving others – Luke 6:37

HOW CAN WE OBTAIN THIS MERCY FROM GOD?

  • We can cry out for mercy.
  • We can ask for mercy.
  • We can desire mercy.
  • We can seek mercy.• We can give mercy.
  • We can appeal to the mercy of God.

CLASS ACTIVITY: Differentiate between mercy and pity.

LIFE APPLICATION: Write out how you have offended God and consider the punishment or judgement that should have followed, had He not shown you mercy. You are saved by His mercy. He forgives your sins by His mercy.

CONCLUSION: As much as it pleases God to show mercy to us despite our unfaithfulness, He expects that we respond with gratitude. God forgives us when we sin, withholds punishment that we deserve and shows us mercy. When we think of the goodness of God and all He has done for us, we give God thanks continuously.

LESSON FORTY ONE(41)
TOPIC: BENEFITS OF A GRATEFUL HEART 11: FAVOUR

BIBLE TEXT: Luke 1:43-55

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 5:12 – “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”

LESSON AIM: To teach the teenagers that having a grateful heart brings favour.

CENTRAL TRUTH: God will cover you with favour if you praise Him.

INTRODUCTION: An experience of favour is when God steps in a situation to make a difference. Favour can be divine – a situation where God singles one out for special treatment. One of the benefits of gratitude is favour. As God delights in our praises, He continues to favour us.

LESSON FORTY TWO(42)
TOPIC: BENEFITS OF A GRATEFUL HEART 12: UNPRECEDENTED WISDOM

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Kings 3:1-15

MEMORY VERSE: 1 Kings 4:29 – “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.”

LESSON AIM: To teach the teenagers that having a grateful heart brings favour.

CENTRAL TRUTH: God gives the wisdom from above that surpasses human or worldly understanding. Opening question: Is there wisdom in being a grateful person?

INTRODUCTION: A simple definition of wisdom is that it is the correct application of knowledge. The word unprecedented means unequalled or unparalleled. Therefore, our topic is about having the kind of wisdom that is divine and can’t be matched with others. One can be knowledgeable about something but until you apply that knowledge, you are not seen as a wise person. We have been learning about gratitude for so long and after all that has been taught, if you remain ungrateful, then you are not wise.

STUDY GUIDE
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY CONCERNING HUMAN WISDOM?

  • Man usually seeks the world’s wisdom – 1 Cor 1:22.
  • The wisdom of the world is foolishness unto God – 1 Cor 1:18-19, 27.
  • We cannot know or please God with human wisdom because it is shallow-1 Cor 1:21.
  • Worldly wisdom causes envy, competition, jealousy and strife – Jer 4:22, Rom 1:22, James 3:14-17.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY CONCERNING DIVINE WISDOM?

  • It is a gift from God – Eccl 2:26, Dan 2:21.
  • God shows His might through His wisdom – Job 36:5, Eph 3:10.
  • It is pure, gentle and teachable – James 3:17.

WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THIS DIVINE WISDOM?

  • Give your life to the Lord Jesus Christ-1 Cor 1:13.
  • Fear God-Job 28:28.
  • Praise and thank God like Solomon, who gave much to Him.
  • Ask for wisdom from God-James 1:5.
  • Read, study and meditate on the Word of God -2 Tim 3:15.

CLASS ACTIVITY: Discuss examples of Solomon’s wisdom found in 1 Kings 3:16-28,1 Kings 10:4-7.

CONCLUSION: Solomon was wise enough to be grateful to God and because of this God rewarded him with much more wisdom to rule his people. If you want more wisdom, cultivate the habit of being grateful to God always.

LESSON FORTY THREE(43)
TOPIC: BENEFITS OF A GRATEFUL HEART 13: PERFORMANCE OF EXPLOITS

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Samuel 17:1-25

MEMORY VERSE: Daniel 11:32b – “But the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

LESSON AIM: To teach the teenagers to show gratitude to God by working for Him.

CENTRAL TRUTH: God created you to do exploits for Him.

OPENING QUESTION: When you hear the name King David, what comes to your mind?

INTRODUCTION: An exploit is an act done with boldness and intentionality. God gives us the confidence to do exploits for Him. We all know David to be a man of praise; he worshipped God so much that God said he was a man after His heart. God made a covenant with David.

STUDY GUIDE
FOR YOU TO DO EXPLOITS FOR GOD, YOU MUST:

  • Have a cordial and intimate relationship with Him – Dan11:32b.

  • Take action! This involves putting your knowledge to work. Do not be afraid to take action as and when due. Remember, the sea did not part until the children of Israel stepped towards it.

CLASS ACTIVITY : From our text, despite the size of David’s challenge, he overcame. From 1 Sam 17, how can you describe David and Goliath?

LET US LOOK AT SOME OF DAVID’S CHARACTERISTICS THAT MADE HIM DO EXPLOITS FOR GOD

  • He spent time in God’s presence – Ps 119:164, Ps 55:1

CONCLUSION: To do exploits for God, we must know God and we can only get to know Him when we spend time in His presence, speaking to Him in psalms and hymns. When we spend time in God’s presence, we become stronger, more confident and empowered. When we are strong, we will do exploits for God.

CENTRAL TRUTH: God’s will and plan for you is to fulfill His purpose for your life.

OPENING QUESTION: What is God’s plan for your life?

INTRODUCTION: You know that God has something good in store for you. He doesn’t intend you to live a life of pain and sorrow in which each day is a total drag. In Psalm 63:7, David said “… for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” How can you get to that place where instead of wandering aimlessly through life, you’re actually singing for joy?

STUDY GUIDE
