LESSON SEVEN (07)
TOPIC: THE WORD OF GOD
BIBLE TEXTS: John 17:16-19
[16]They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
[17]Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
[18]As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
[19]And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
John 1:1
[1]In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Psalms 119:11
[11]Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
MEMORY VERSE: Colossians 3:16- “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
LESSON AIM: For teenagers to know why understanding the Word of God is crucial for their faith journey.
CENTRAL TRUTH: The Word of God is the truth.
INTRODUCTION: The believer’s compass in life is the Word of God. It is like a user manual to guide, teach and instruct us on how to go about our lives, especially in this world filled with all manner of challenges and corruption. It not only gives solutions but empowers and equips us for whatever lies ahead in life.
STUDY GUIDE
A. WHAT IS THE WORD OF GOD?
- The Bible is the inspired Word of God – 2 Timothy 3:16.
- Jesus is the living Word of God – John 1:1.
- The Word of God is the Truth John 17:17, Proverbs 30:5.

B. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD OF GOD
The Word of God:
- has the ultimate authority and is trustworthy – 2 Timothy 3:16, Psalm 119:130.
- is powerful-Hebrews 4:12, 2 Corinthians 10:5.
- is relevant across all generations – Isaiah 40:8.
- provides spiritual nourishment and sustenance for believers – John 6:63, Psalm-119:105
- The Word of God is purposeful – 2 Timothy 3:15, John 20:31.
C. BENEFITS OF THE WORD OF GOD
- It keeps us from committing sin – Psalm 119:11.
- It offers us free counselling – Psalm 119:24.
- It makes a believer perfect and prepares him/her for good works-2 Timothy 3:16-17,
- It serves as a common ground for worship, teaching, and mutual edification, fostering unity among believers Colossians 3:16.
- It has the power to renew minds, change hearts, and conform believers to the image of Christ – Romans 12:2, James 1:22-25.
D. HOW TO APPLY THE WORD OF GOD TO OUR LIVES
- Read it regularly (daily devotions).
- Study it with others – Colossians 3:16.
- Meditate on it day and night – Joshua 1:8.
- Share it with others (evangelism, witnessing) – 2 Corinthians 5:18, Matthew 28:19.
- Study the Word diligently -2 Timothy 2:15-
LIFE APPLICATION: The Word of God has the power and ability to impact every area of our lives, but only if we believe in it. Get various translations of the Bible, a concordance, study Bible or Bible commentaries to help simplify your studying of the Word. God’s Word is life, feed on it!
CONCLUSION: The Word of God is indispensable to the Christian faith, providing guidance, truth, transformation, and hope to believers, as they seek to live in obedience to God and fulfill His purpose in the world. Everything you will ever need to live life successfully on Earth is in the Word. Go for the Word! Seek knowledge. Study to show yourself approved.
ASSIGNMENT: Use another translation of the Bible apart from the KJV – like Amplified classic, to help you understand the Bible easily.
