TOPIC: SANCTIFICATION THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD

READ: JOHN 17:11-19 (NKJV)

17:11. “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We [are.]

17:12. “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

17:13. “But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.

17:14. “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

17:15. “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

17:16. “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

17:17. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

17:18. “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

17:19. “And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

THE MESSAGE:

Sanctification is a theological term that has been widely expounded by various Christian scholars. Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology defines sanctification as the state of proper functioning. It means to be made holy and set apart for special use. In our text today, we see that Jesus, having fulfilled His ministry and at the point of going back to His Father, prayed for His disciples. He prayed that the Father would sanctify them through His word (verse 17). They needed to be sanctified so as to live in such a way that would attract the glory of God. They would also manifest the power of God in their given assignment. Sanctification involves separation, consecration and dedication to a life of purity made possible only through the word of God. Jesus Christ desired that His disciples would give themselves to God for the task of spreading the good news of salvation to the world. But then, they needed to be sanctified through the word of God.

As a believer, you need to know that it is the will of God that you are sanctified (I Thessalonians 4:3). We live in a world full of corruptible and abominable acts, wickedness and immorality. The word of God is the only potent instrument that brings sanctification to man’s life. God has called you to holy living. As a follower of Christ, living to reveal the beauty of God in this world of darkness should be your priority. The word of God has power to purge your heart from every form of impurity and make you suitable for noble use (2 Timothy 2:21). When you allow the word of God to occupy your heart, it purges you and makes you become a noble vessel.

PRAYER: Lord, let the power of Your word bring sanctification to my spirit, soul and body, in Jesus’ name. Amen
