DO NOT DESPISE THE LITTLE ONES

Matt. 18:10 (NLT), Matt. 10:42 (NIV), Matt. 25:40 (NLT), 1Sam.16:7b ..don’t look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.’ .. for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

God does not see the way that men see. Many times, men look on the outward to conduct their assessments and judgments and decide on who to honour or despise. That is precisely why Prophet Samuel almost anointed the wrong person as king of Israel and so many people make mistakes in life because of this wrong attitude.

God does not despise or discriminate against anyone. On the contrary, God likes to use those who men despise and call foolish and weak to do things that greatly amaze those who think they are wise and strong, (1Cor.1:27-28). It was through the advice of a little Israeli maid, who was a captive in Syria, that Naaman received his healing, (2Kings 5:1-14).

The ‘little ones’ that God does not want us to despise include both little children and people who may seem to be low right now – either based on their social status or any other physical rating or condition, especially when they are believers, (Gal.6:10). The Bible urges us to, “… stop evaluating Christians by what the world thinks about them or by what they seem to be like on the outside. … When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside…”, 2Cor. 5:16-17 (LB). Jesus loved and related well with both children (Mark 10:13-14) and those whom others hated and despised. Psalms 82:3 (LB) says, “Give fair judgment to the poor man, the afflicted, the fatherless, the destitute.” The New International Version says, “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.” Never rejoice or ignore when injustice being meted out to little ones.

Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank you for your wisdom and grace to love and to care for children and people despised by society, just like Jesus did.
